The TATA IPL 2024, organized by Tata, serves as a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills and the Lucknow Super Giants took advantage of this opportunity by discovering a promising young player during their win against Punjab Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. In his debut match in the IPL, Mayank Yadav exhibited his fiery pace on a batting-friendly pitch, leading his team to a 21-run victory.
In pursuit of a target of 200, PBKS made a strong beginning thanks to their opening batsmen Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow. The two players were aggressive during the powerplay, maintaining a scoring rate of more than 10 runs per over. Dhawan reached his fifty in the eighth over by hitting a huge six off Ravi Bishnoi’s bowling. By the 11th over, PBKS had crossed the 100-run mark and seemed ready to shift into a higher gear and chase down the target quickly.
LSG made a comeback by introducing newcomer Mayank into the game. In his initial over, he caught the batters off guard with his speed, even reaching over 150 kmph multiple times. He successfully took the wicket of Bairstow in his following over when the right-handed player attempted to hit on the leg side but failed to connect with enough force. Prabhsimran Singh, who was brought in as an Impact Player, had an immediate impact with two sixes – one over long-on from Ravi Bishnoi and the other over third-man from Mayank, where Mohsin Khan caught the ball but stepped over the boundary line.
Prabhsimran was dismissed by Mayank for attempting to hit the ball over mid-on, but he couldn’t get enough elevation. While wickets were falling at the other end, Dhawan stayed put. Jitesh Sharma got off to a good start, hitting a boundary through mid-off against Mohsin’s bowling. But Mayank struck once again when Jitesh attempted a pull shot and ended up top-edging it, resulting in a catch by Naveen-ul-Haq at mid-wicket. By the time Mayank’s spell of three for 27 was over, PBKS needed 60 runs in the last four overs. Dhawan’s innings came to an end on 70 when he tried to pull a slower bouncer from Mohsin, but ended up gloving it to the wicketkeeper. Curran was dismissed on the very first ball while attempting a pull shot against Mohsin.
Following that, PBKS faced a difficult challenge, especially with Livingstone hindered by an injury sustained during the game. Despite his efforts, Livingstone was unable to stop LSG from securing victory.
Nicholas Pooran took on the role of captain for LSG during the toss, replacing KL Rahul who only batted and was then substituted by Naveen, the Impact Player. Pooran explained that this decision was made to help Rahul ease back into the tournament after his injury. LSG opted to bat first on a favorable pitch in front of their loyal home fans.
The beginning of LSG’s innings was led by Quinton de Kock, who hit an impressive 38-ball 54. Rahul also had a strong start, but his attempt to hit through point ended in a fantastic catch by Bairstow. In the sixth over, Devdutt Padikkal created some space and attempted to hit over mid-off, but was unsuccessful as he found the fielder.
During this time, de Kock persevered and maintained a steady pace while batting. The momentum of the innings increased when Nicholas Pooran joined de Kock. Their partnership of 47 runs in 27 balls laid a strong foundation for a high score. Despite de Kock getting out in the 14th over, Pooran continued his aggressive approach and scored 42 runs off 21 balls, including three fours and three sixes. However, his innings came to an end when he accidentally hit the ball onto the stumps from a delivery by Kagiso Rabada.
During the final overs, Krunal Pandya played an enterprising innings of 43 runs off 22 balls, which led LSG to a score close to 200.
The PBKS bowlers continuously took wickets, but with Pandya present, LSG appeared on track to exceed 200 runs. However, a well-executed final over by Harshal Patel prevented LSG from reaching that milestone. Despite the aggressive approach of the batting team, Sam Curran stood out as the top bowler with a 3/28 record in his four overs.
