In the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) secured their initial triumph with a 29-run triumph over Delhi Capitals at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Thanks to the dominant showing by their batters, MI was able to set a daunting 234 runs on the board. Despite the efforts of Delhi Capitals’ batters to stay in the game, MI ultimately emerged victorious due to Jasprit Bumrah’s precise bowling.
The innings of MI can be split into two parts, with their captain providing a consistent contribution connecting the two. At the start, the opening batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, delivered a strong beginning with an 80-run partnership in just 42 balls.
At the beginning, Rohit displayed his excellent performance by hitting two sixes through the leg-side off Jhye Richardson. The highlight of his game was when he used his feet to loft the ball over the top and drove full deliveries when Lalit Yadav was introduced into the game. Kishan also played his part with a quick 23-ball 42, showcasing some impressive shots.
Axar Patel’s spell was the turning point for DC in the game. With an impressive display of left-arm spin, Axar utilized strategic lines and lengths to contain Rohit in the seventh over, eventually dismissing him at 49 runs. In his debut match, Suryakumar Yadav attempted a lofted shot on his second ball, but was unsuccessful and got caught at mid-on, scoring zero runs.
Pandya entered the pitch at the fourth position while Kishan continued to aggressively play. Together, they scored 30 runs in 17 balls before Axar skillfully caught Kishan’s shot and got him out. Khaleel Ahmed also took an early wicket of Tilak Varma, bringing MI’s score to 121 for four in the 13th over.
Tim David entered the field and formed a solid partnership with Pandya. Despite Mumbai Indians (MI) losing wickets, Pandya’s score of 39 runs from 33 balls provided stability. This set the stage for David to excel in the final overs, as he usually does. With his aggressive shots, David dominated the leg side and hit two boundaries and four sixes. He quickly reached 45 runs off 21 balls, securing MI’s total to over 200 before the last over.
At that moment, Shepherd emerged as a prominent player. During the last over, Anrich Nortje was chosen to bowl and was hit for 32 runs by Shepherd, displaying an incredible power hitting performance. The all-rounder managed to hit four sixes and two fours. Some of Shepherd’s shots were struck very low, while one was hit far over square-leg. This decisive over propelled MI to a final score of 234, ultimately proving to be the defining factor in the outcome of the match.
The task of scoring 234 runs was always a daunting one, but the batters from DC showed determination and fought hard to stay in the game for a significant portion of the match. Despite David Warner’s early dismissal with only 10 runs, Prithvi Shaw performed well and achieved his first half-century in the 2024 season. He displayed excellent form, starting from his impressive upper-cut of the second ball of the innings which resulted in a six over third-man.
After Warner’s departure, DC remained subdued in the initial five overs. However, they gained momentum in the latter half of the first 10 overs. Abishek Porel was brought in at the third position and he managed to score a few boundaries, contributing to the increase in the run-rate. In the eighth over, when Piyush Chawla was introduced into the attack, Shaw smashed a six over long-on and followed it up with two consecutive fours. The ninth over saw him reach his half-century with an impressive pull shot for four off Gerald Coetzee.
With Shaw playing strong at 66 runs and the score at 110 for one in the 12th over, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a perfect yorker that went underneath the bat and dismissed the threatening batsman. This delivery can be considered the epitome of a yorker.
Following that, DC continuously lagged behind the required rate, and the dismissals of Porel (41 off 31) and Rishabh Pant added to their difficulties. Despite the challenges, Tristan Stubbs persisted with a fierce performance. The batsman, who bats with his right hand, aggressively took on all of the MI bowlers and achieved his fifty in just 19 balls. He smashed a total of seven sixes and three fours in his determined innings and ended with an undefeated 71 off only 25 balls.

As DC struggled to gain momentum, Stubbs continued to fight on, but MI maintained control over the game. Although Coetzee took the most wickets for MI with a total of four, it was Bumrah who shone as the standout bowler. Despite both teams scoring over 200 runs, Bumrah’s impressive performance of two wickets for 22 runs in four overs was invaluable for MI.
