A thrilling ending unfolded at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as Punjab Kings (PBKS) bounced back to victory in the 2024 TATA Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite Gujarat Titans (GT) setting a challenging target of 199, PBKS appeared to have little chance of winning. Nevertheless, the IPL has a way of motivating emerging players, which was evident when Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma led PBKS to a remarkable three-wicket triumph that will be cherished by their fellow players and supporters for a considerable period.

The toss was won by PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan who decided to bowl first. Due to injuries, both teams had to make a substitution. Sikandar Raza was brought in to replace Liam Livingstone for PBKS, while Kane Williamson took the place of David Miller.

Shubman Gill, the captain of GT, played a crucial role in their innings as he remained unbeaten on 89 off 48 balls at a ground where he is known to excel at batting. This performance brought back memories of the 2023 season when he had scored two centuries out of his three in the TATA IPL at the same venue. His innings was a display of his usual class and elegance. He started off strong by hitting Harpreet Brar for a six in the very first over and maintained his impressive form till the end.

In Gill’s batting performance, the most remarkable moment was when he hit a six straight over Kagiso Rabada’s head in the 13th over. It was a display of balance, grace, and skill. Gill’s score reached the 80s in the 18th over, but he was unable to reach a century as he did not have many opportunities to face the ball in the final over.

After Wriddhiman Saha (11) was dismissed early, Gill found support from Kane Williamson (26 off 22 balls) and Sai Sudharsan (33 off 19 balls). This was Williamson’s first match of the season and his debut in the TATA IPL for GT. He had scored some elegant boundaries before being taken out by Harpreet Brar in the ninth over.

GT’s momentum in the middle overs was boosted by Sai Sudharsan’s impressive cameo. In just 19 balls, he managed to hit six boundaries, effectively increasing the pace of the game. His energy also had a positive impact on Gill, who was batting on the other end. However, Sudharsan’s dismissal for an attempted upper-cut led to him walking back to the pavilion even before the umpire could make a ruling.

At the start, GT may have aimed for a score of 200, but at a certain point, it appeared out of reach. However, with Rahul Tewatia’s clever performance of scoring 23 runs in eight balls, they were able to reach 199. Tewatia displayed his creative abilities with a flick over square leg for six and a sweep off Harshal Patel for four in the 19th over.

The pursuit of PBKS began impressively, as Jonny Bairstow scored three boundaries in the initial over delivered by Azmatullah Omarzai. GT retaliated when Umesh Yadav took his first wicket in the second over, with Shikhar Dhawan getting an inside edge onto his stumps while trying to cut.

Bairstow and Prabhsimran showed signs of improvement as they played a series of aggressive shots. Prabhsimran, in particular, displayed his dominance. However, their partnership came to an end when Bairstow was dismissed by Noor Ahmad, who delivered a beautiful ball that went between his bat and pad.

Noor found himself in a predicament once again, as he was unable to continue his innings and was dismissed for 35 by the dangerous Prabhsimran. The middle overs proved to be challenging for PBKS as GT took wickets at regular intervals. However, when Shashank Singh entered the field, their chances were reignited. Shashank wasted no time in being aggressive and attempting to lower the required run rate. In the 16th over, Jitesh Sharma joined in the effort by hitting two consecutive sixes. Unfortunately, he lost his wicket while attempting a third shot towards mid-wicket.

In the final four overs, PBKS was required to score 47 runs. Mohit Sharma delivered an impressive over, allowing only 16 runs. As the tension rose, Ashutosh Sharma, the Impact Player for PBKS, rejuvenated their chances by hitting three boundaries off Omarzai. At the same time, Shashank quickly reached his half-century in just 25 deliveries.

Mohit came back for the second to last over with 25 runs required, but ended up conceding 18 runs. Ashutosh and Shashank were in a dominating form. In the final delivery, Shashank smashed a six over mid-wicket, leaving them with a target of seven runs in the last over.

The final over of the match saw Darshan Nalkande being brought in. On his very first delivery, he managed to get Ashutosh (31 off 17 balls) caught at long-on. With three balls remaining and five runs needed, Shashank (61 off 29 balls) got an outside edge which resulted in a boundary over third-man. The match was then sealed for PBKS with a leg-bye. The partnership of 43 runs between Ashutosh and Shashank proved to be the deciding factor for the visiting team.
