The Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 saw Rajasthan Royals (RR) continue their winning streak with a six-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 14 at Wankhede Stadium. RR’s bowlers performed well, limiting MI to a score of 125, which RR chased down with 27 balls remaining.
The opening bowlers of RR proved their worth to their captain Sanju Samson by delivering a solid performance after he chose to bowl first upon winning the toss. The pitch offered a lot of movement, which the RR bowlers skillfully utilized to establish an advantage for their team. Trent Boult made an impact right from the start, getting Rohit Sharma out caught behind and Naman Dhir dismissed leg-before.
The decision to replace Naman Dhir with Dewald Brevis as an Impact Player was made by MI. However, this decision did not prove to be successful as Brevis was dismissed on his first ball to short third-man by Boult in the third over. Furthermore, the first three batters were all dismissed on their first deliveries.
During the following over, Nandre Burger was able to make an impact by causing Ishan Kishan (16 runs from 14 balls) to unintentionally hit the ball towards the wicketkeeper. With the score at 20 for four in only the fourth over, the captain of MI, Hardik Pandya, entered the field with a daunting challenge ahead of him.
The next move was a retaliatory strike, as Tilak Varma and Pandya both attempted to take advantage of the final two overs of the powerplay. Tilak successfully hit a six off Boult towards fine-leg. In the last over of the powerplay, delivered by Burger, Pandya managed to score three boundaries – often employing footwork and aggressively charging at the bowler.
The positive batting of MI persisted beyond the powerplay, resulting in a steady flow of runs. Varma and Pandya effectively contributed 56 runs together before Pandya’s (34 off 21 balls) dismissal in an attempt to hit Yuzvendra Chahal over long-on. Chahal’s impressive performance ultimately crushed any chances of MI achieving a high score.
During the middle overs, the leg-spinner maintained a tight line and took three wickets. Even though R Ashwin did not secure any wickets, he only gave away 27 runs in his four overs. The fielders of RR also played a crucial role in supporting their bowlers. The most notable moment was when Shimron Hetmyer caught Piyush Chawla at point from Avesh Khan’s delivery.
In the 14th over, Tilak (32 runs off 29 balls) was finally dismissed, leaving the responsibility of scoring to Tim David. Despite being a powerful middle-order batter, David could only score 17 runs in the last overs before being taken out by Burger. Ultimately, MI’s final score was 125 for nine.
The wicket was providing some movement for the MI bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah. In the first over, Kwena Maphaka managed to get Yashaswi Jaiswal out when he attempted to hit over cover. The initial overs were a challenge for Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson due to the movement, but they were able to navigate through it as the target was not too intimidating and they chose their opportunities to score wisely.
In the seventh over, RR were at 48 for three as Samson executed his usual off-side drives. However, in his first match of the tournament, Akash Madhwal managed to bowl a delivery that resulted in an inside edge onto the stumps. A few overs later, Madhwal made another successful strike as Buttler’s pull shot was caught by the fielder at fine-leg.
The duo of Ashwin and Riyan Parag formed a crucial alliance of 40 runs, which proved to be a game-changer against MI. Madhwal once again struck to end the partnership as he managed to get Ashwin out for 16 runs. This right-arm pacer displayed impressive determination in his season debut.
Parag’s impressive streak of success persisted. However, he had to modify his approach and remain cautious at the start. As the target drew near, he accelerated and reached his half-century with two back-to-back sixes against Gerald Coetzee. The victory was sealed when Parag hit a four through the fine-leg.
During a game where many players struggled, Parag’s performance led RR through some tense moments. Despite the challenging situation, he remained undefeated with a score of 54 off 39 balls, which was the highest score of the day for both teams. As a result of his outstanding performance, he was awarded the Orange Cap at the end of the match.
