In the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Gujarat Titans (GT) achieved a remarkable win at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with seven wickets remaining. The bowlers performed well and the batting unit worked together, securing GT’s second victory in the 2024 season.
During a sunny afternoon in Ahmedabad, the toss was won by SRH captain Pat Cummins who decided to bat first. With their recent impressive performance leading to the highest team score in the Tata IPL, SRH entered the match with confidence to face GT’s bowling.
The start of SRH’s match in Hyderabad was more stable compared to their previous one, as they did not aggressively score during the powerplay. Travis Head remained on the offensive, but Mayank Agarwal took a more cautious approach and was eventually eliminated in the fifth over while attempting to flick Azmatullah Omarzai towards backward square-leg.
In the powerplay, Abhishek Sharma also showed aggression and greeted Rashid Khan’s entry into the attack by hitting two sixes. However, after the powerplay, Head was removed for 19 runs as Noor Ahmad managed to bowl him out while he was attempting a slog.
The noteworthy aspect of the SRH innings was that GT consistently took wickets, even though the batters showed bursts of aggression and got off to a good start. The most successful partnership of the innings was between Abdul Samad and Shahbaz Ahmed, who added 45 runs for the sixth wicket and helped accelerate the score towards the end. However, none of the SRH batters managed to surpass 30 runs, with Abhishek and Samad both scoring 29 runs, making them the leading scorers. A total of four batters reached the 20s mark.
In the match between GT and SRH, Mohit Sharma proved to be the standout performer with his impressive bowling figures of three wickets for 25 runs in four overs. His crucial spell included consecutive dismissals in the final over, playing a crucial role in limiting SRH to a total of 162.
The target for GT was 163 runs and they got off to a strong start thanks to Wriddhiman Saha. The wicketkeeper-batsman used his typical range of shots during the powerplay, strategically finding openings and hitting the ball past the fielders. One notable moment was when he hit a six over mid-wicket off Jaydev Unadkat.
During the powerplay, Shahbaz, a left-arm spinner, was introduced into the game. In his second over, he provided SRH with their initial breakthrough when Saha attempted to hit over mid-on but was caught by a fielder. Replacing Mohit as an Impact Player, Sai Sudharsan entered the game at No. 3. As Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan batted in the middle, GT steadily moved closer to the target.
After Saha’s departure, Gill increased his speed and executed some aggressive shots. He effortlessly lofted Shahbaz for a six over wide long-off. Sudharsan began with confidence, hitting a well-timed flick through mid-wicket off Bhuveshwar. Together, they scored an additional 38 runs as the first time-out approached. However, shortly after the break, Gill was eliminated while attempting to clear long-on off Mayank Markande.
With his experience, GT has elevated David Miller to the No. 4 position to lead the chase and form a partnership with the talented Sudharsan. They began by exchanging the strike and avoiding unnecessary risks. As the game entered its final five overs, GT had a target of 49 runs. Despite their opponents, SRH, holding on to hope, as they had successfully defended a similar margin last week against MI at the same location.
In the 16th over, Miller and Sudharsan launched an attack on Markande, resulting in a gain of 24 runs. Miller showcased his signature style by hitting two sixes, while Sudharsan also contributed by sending one over long on and into the crowd. This occurred while Miller was struggling with an injury and was being tended to by the GT physio. As a result, their hopes were shattered.
Sudharsan was dismissed for 45 runs when he struck a shot straight to the mid-wicket and was caught by Cummins. Despite this, the run rate had already decreased to one run per ball by this point.
Shankar and Miller successfully completed the task with five balls remaining, calmly reaching the target. Miller secured the victory with a six towards long-off, remaining undefeated at 44 runs.
