In the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Delhi Capitals (DC) secured their first points by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with a 20-run victory. The match at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam showcased an impressive overall performance by DC, which allowed them to overcome the strong CSK team.

At their home ground, DC made the decision to bat first in conditions that were favorable to batting. In place of Ricky Bhui, Prithvi Shaw was included in the team and was given the role of opening the batting alongside David Warner. Initially, the DC openers were careful and taking their time to assess the CSK bowling attack. After the first four overs, they had reached a score of 24 runs.

In the power play, DC batters took the opportunity to attack when Deepak Chahar came on to bowl his third over. They managed to score 18 runs, with Warner’s scoop behind square for six being the standout shot. Mustafizur Rahman was then brought in to bowl the final over of the power play. Shaw also joined in on the attack, hitting three boundaries in an over that yielded 20 runs. As a result, DC had reached a score of 62 for no loss by the end of the first six overs.

Following the powerplay, the attack persisted as Shaw greeted Ravindra Jadeja with a six hit over long-on. Keeping a steady pace of over 10 runs per over, CSK maintained their dominance. However, it was the entry of Matheesha Pathirana into the match that sparked a comeback for CSK.

At the beginning, Pathirana’s initial contribution did not come from his unique bowling style, but rather from a remarkable display of athleticism on the field. During the 10th over, Warner attempted a reverse-scoop shot on Mustafizur’s delivery towards third-man. However, Pathirana, positioned at short third, made a spectacular dive to his right to catch the ball. This left the batsman stunned. In the next over, Shaw also managed to get a thick edge on Jadeja’s ball, which was caught by MS Dhoni’s gloves, just one delivery after hitting a six.

During the following overs, Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh worked together to regain their position. Although they were able to score some boundaries, their pace slowed down compared to the beginning. In the 15th over, Pathirana was brought in to bowl. Unfortunately, Marsh was taken down by a classic, low-slinging yorker that went under his bat and caused the wickets to fall. Just a few deliveries later, Tristan Stubbs was also caught off guard by a similar toe-crusher. With a score of 134 for four in 15 overs, DC faced a challenging task in the remaining five overs.

During this moment, Pant assumed control and revealed his aggressive shots. In the following overs, he gradually shifted gears and was able to attack both Mustafizur and Pathirana. Mustafizur was hit for a six, and in the 19th over, Pant successfully defended against a yorker from Pathirana and sent it soaring over long-on for another six. He then scored a couple of fours, crossing the fifty-run mark for the first time since his celebrated comeback. While he did get out soon after, Pant’s efforts were sufficient in contributing to DC’s total score of 191.

The start of CSK’s response was unstable due to Khaleel Ahmed’s early movement. In the first over, Ruturaj Gaikwad edged a ball from outside the off stump into Pant’s gloves. Scoring runs was challenging in the beginning as both Ishant Sharma and Khaleel maintained a tight line. The pressure increased on CSK when Rachin Ravindra attempted to hit Khaleel in the third over but ended up hitting it high in the air to mid-off. During the powerplay, Khaleel took two wickets for just nine runs in three overs.

The responsibility of lifting the team fell on Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell. Rahane showed a positive approach from the start, hitting two fours off Ishant in the fourth over. He also impressed with a powerful six off Anrich Nortje’s delivery. Meanwhile, Mitchell took some time to settle in but eventually went on the offensive against Axar Patel in the ninth over, smashing a massive six down the ground. After the first break, the CSK players decided to switch gears and took on Rasikh Salam, who was filling in for Shaw. Salam was hit for two sixes, indicating CSK’s aggressive intentions. However, Patel got a breakthrough in the next over as Mitchell hit the ball straight back to him.

Rahane was effectively leading the batting performance and was comfortably progressing into his 40s. But, in the 14th over, Mukesh Kumar struck twice, taking Rahane’s wicket at long-on and getting Sameer Rizvi caught at short third-man on the very first ball. This was the turning point for DC’s bowlers as they started putting pressure on the opposition.

As the slog overs neared, the asking rate for CSK continued to rise. The challenge became even greater when Shivam Dube was caught at long-off by Mukesh, who claimed his third wicket in the 17th over. This led to Dhoni’s entrance to the crease, greeted by enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. He delighted his fans with two boundaries in the beginning. In the next over, Dhoni effortlessly hit a huge six over cover off Khaleel.

Mukesh gave an outstanding performance in the penultimate over by taking three wickets for 21 runs, effectively eliminating any possibility of a comeback for CSK. In the final over, Dhoni scored 37 runs off 16 balls, providing some entertainment for the spectators as he hit four sixes in a row against Nortje. However, despite his efforts, the target was too difficult to overcome and CSK ended up losing by a margin of 20 runs.
